It is fall here at Nancy’s Bagel Grounds. Which means, the aroma of fresh pumpkin bagels and delicious homemade soups filling the air. October means pumpkin bagels all month and in November two weeks before Thanksgiving the pumpkin bagel come back with cranberries in them. I am talking about some good food here. Soup, yes i mentioned it before. We have started our six week rotation of fresh homemade soups. That is right, six weeks. Each day is a different soup and when the six weeks is up, we start over. All our soups are vegetarian, except Wednesdays, which is chicken day. SO, what are you waiting for. Come on in and enjoy. Also, as soon as i can find time to make it , our famous Cranberry spread will be available. If you haven’t tried it, you are missing something. It is spicy, it is sweet, and it is divine. Hope to see you this fall enjoying some of our seasonal favorites.

It has been a very busy month here at Nancy’s. We have said goodbye to several staff members who are on their way to new adventures in school. We have also been training some new, young enthusiastic staff members to take their place. So, i would like to pay tribute to those who left and welcome our new ones.

First, Goodbye to Jacob. He has left the state to pursue a Master’s Degree in Writing from the University of Massachusetts. I will miss his wide variety of music he introduced us to and his great sense of humor. Jacob worked here for two years and was an excellent employee and friend. Good luck Jacob. Goodbye to Erin. Erin is going off to college in Berea. She worked here for four years and learned both sides of this business, working with the customers and working in the kitchen. She was very valuable and a happy spirit. I will miss her smiling, laughing face. Hopefully, we will see Erin fill in a shift during the holidays. We said Goodbye to Erin’s sister Katie last year, but Katie actually filled in a shift just last week and we welcomed her back with open arm. These sisters are a prize. I feel lucky to have had them with me for so long. I will miss them both. Goodbye to Jessie. Jessie is heading to the University of Cincinnati to start her college career. She worked here for two years and was the source of keeping us up to date with the latest drama in the high school scene. She also worked with the customers and in the kitchen and was always available to help. We will probably see her during holidays. I will miss her, and so will my daughter. Goodbye to Sydney. She is off to Western Kentucky University. Sydney was here for two years and the pillar on Sundays. She keep things calm and collected even on the craziest days. I will miss her reliability and stability. Good luck Sydney. Goodbye to Jeff. Jeff is off to the University of Kentucky. Go Big Blue. He loves the Cats. Jeff was Mr. Anything. He did anything we needed him to do from taking out the garbage to working the front counter. Jeff worked here for two years also. Hopefully he learned a few things from working with all women most days, ha!. He was a little clumsy and left here with a few scars, something to remember us by. Good luck Jeff.

These kids became part of my bagel family and i will miss them, but hope to keep in contact and follow along in the college adventures.

WELCOME! to the new staff. We have, Julia, Ally, Devon, Sam, Corey, Maura, and Phoenix. They are learning fast and doing very well. Please say hello and welcome them when you come in. This is their first job for a few of them and we hope to give then a positive and happy experience. We also want to welcome Linda. Linda is our new kitchen prep person on the weekends and is fitting into our crazy little family quite well. We also have Debbie, who has been here for about 3 months and we love her.

I have been extremely lucky in my years here to have had so many great employees come though. I hope that they have enjoyed or are enjoying their time here and i thank them for their loyalty and dedication to Nancy’s.

I can hardly believe that it has been almost 16 years since I opened my doors here on Frankfort Avenue. I was just a simple girl with big dreams of owning my own place and serving delicious homemade food. My goal was to provide a comfortable place for people to come and enjoy good, healthy food and feel like they were eating in their own kitchen. I guess Nancy’s has succeeded in that respect. I also thought that this town needed a good bagel. I think, (I am biased) ,my bagel recipe is one of the best in the country, and I have been told that by many other bagel connoisseurs. I have eaten bagels all over the world and I haven’t found one better than ours here at Nancy’s. Over the years our menu has developed into making Nancy’s not just a bagel and coffee shop, by the way our coffee rocks, but a full service café offering oatmeal, muffins, granola, wraps, soups, salad, smoothies and a variety of homemade desserts. Back to our coffee, we serve a coffee that is roasted by the wonderful people at Columbia River Coffee Roasters. They are a small batch roaster from Astoria, Oregon. Their beans are delicious and they started when the big coffee movement came out of the northwest. These guys know what they are doing. We use their product in both my locations exclusively. You should come in and try a latte or a cup of Thundermuck.

I have learned a lot in the last 16 years. It has been an interesting ride. I have had lots of high points and a few lows, but over all a very rewarding experience. I will be writing a blog about how we do certain things with production here to funny stories about our staff and customers. So, follow along and learn about the wacky world of owning a café.
